Together with Jimbocho and Surugadai, the Ogawamachi area has been home to many schools since the Meiji era. From around the mid-Showa era (1960’s) large-scale sports equipment shops began to open, a reflection of the hobbies of the young students associated with the area. Today, people come from all over to visit Japan’s most famous sports shops district. Even if you aren’t interested in sports, you might want to visit some of the popular musical instruments shops frequented by many famous musicians which are also located here.
